Job Description:
An advertising agency Client Marketing Director (CMD) is key to maintaining the relationship between the agency and the client. CMD's are the liaison between the client and the creative team to ensure the client's needs and goals are being met on every project. The CMD also manages pitches to the client, the client's ad budget and generally handles many non-competing client accounts at a time.

Education and Training:
Client Marketing Directors should have a degree or diploma in marketing, communications, advertising, or business (or similar program) and/or three years of experience in the field.  The ability to manage a wide variety of tasks at one time is a must with a strong emphasis on leadership.  (internship positions are available for those interested and who posses the desire and attributes needed to excel but do not have the aforementioned experience and qualifications)

Full Description
The job of a CMD is to quickly grasp each client's goals, apply relevant marketing and business principals and strategy and then make use of the resources of the agency and its affiliates to build the most effective campaign. They may:

  • research clients' products, services, plans, competitors and target markets
  • apply marketing principals and strategy in order to plan a response to fulfill the client’s needs
  • meet clients for briefings and present proposals to clients for approval
  • brief agency colleagues, and work with them to plan and implement the best advertising solutions for the client
  • help guide and manage the creative response to ensure that projects are completed on time, on budget and on message/strategy.
  • provide creative copywriting where required for media releases, print, radio, television and web when needed.  Work with freelance copywriters for larger scale projects. 
  • coordinate all client requirements including quotes, media buying, budgeting and as needed coordination services

Tasks may include:

  • researching clients' products, services, plans, competitors and target markets
    meeting clients for briefings
  • briefing agency colleagues, and working with them to plan and implement the best advertising solutions for the client
  • presenting proposals to the client for approval
  • ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget
  • meeting clients to discuss strategy and report on progress
  • responding to clients' requests as they arise
  • taking part in pitches for new contracts
  • keeping records and handling invoices
  • meeting with media reps and other suppliers to source options and pricing
  • writing web and ad copy when necessary
  • the ability to write a marketing/business plan is also a definite asset
  • the ability to write radio and television scripts and manage their production is a definite asset
  • conceptualizing with the creative team to ensure a proper start to each project
  • project quoting and tracking of billable hours for invoicing purposes
  • coordinating small and large scale special events and promotions

Client Marketing Directors may focus on a single client or work on behalf of several at once. To ensure client requirements are met, Client Marketing Directors need to work closely with colleagues including suppliers, media reps, copywriters, designers and administrative staff. This position reports directly to the company president.

Typical Day:

  • meet with clients at regularly scheduled intervals as well as when needed
  • assist creative department with simple creative writing requirements
  • check the status of each client's job(s) in the creative department and verify the jobs will be complete on time and keep client informed of progress
  • contact each client at least once a day to discuss current and upcoming projects
  • initiate and recommend new jobs for the client
  • review and present concepts/layouts/copy to the client for approval
  • communicate the client's feedback to the creative department and discuss the next steps in the campaign
